Yes, correct. Positional experience is one of the variables in the star rating. So playing matches can change the star rating without having changed any of the other attributes.
If their pos xp is around 1000 then it won't change very much, so will have a smaller effect on the star rating. But it also depends on the players position and where he plays in the match.
In your case you had a defender playing as a DM, so his defence xp went down by -4.37 from 937 to 933. Which resulted in a drop of his star rating as a defender. If he'd played as a defender then the xp would have gone up instead by +0.63, which is a much smaller change.
The only safe approach is to record the player's details on the day, after he's played any matches and before the training finishes.

Based on very limited data I would expect Galang to increase his rating by somewhere around 2%. So a bold prediction would near the middle of 19.25 and 19.50. :)
I think the gain is linear, looking for .30 . Why is * always a factor of .05 ?
I gave fixed power training to a young forward with a star value of 0.80 (and 1.80 youth bonus). He was Athletic so he got 1.20 balls of extra power.
When the training finished his star value was unchanged. The only thing I'm entirely sure about is that it can't be linear.
Only Vincent can tell us why he's rounded the numbers to end with .05. From my point of view it makes it a lot harder to try and reverse engineer the algorithm. :(

I recorded that last night as a change from 19.00 to 19.40, which is an increase of between 2.024% and 2.61% per ball of power. [The range is due to rounding].
My opinion regarding rounded values for stars is that all players attributes, including talent, speed etc. seem to be integer numbers. Then they are transformed to balls just for display purposes. So maybe star value is also calculated as integer number and for display purposes that integer is divided by 20 just like any other attribute of a a player...
