yes it is. but you have to put them in your reserve team first. there you can fire them. but i would suggest you to sell the players if they have a value of 1 or higher.

Putting players on the transferlist doesn't cost you anything, so before firing, just try to transferlist them - if noone buys them, you can fire them anyway.

VIP is the main factor. But look at Kosmo's Columbia. He started after me and is my biggest rival now. He even has more popularity than me.
This season was international a disaster for my team. I didn't get into Championsleague and even in Europa League I was out in the group stage. So FC Korndackeln was not very successfull. On the other hand I won the league - which is expected since I have the most created players and I was lucky with my cup draws (I played against all strong opponents at home).
I'd rather be interested in Austria Wien Sopron's Secret. How come a newly promoted team can turn this league so around.
But the only tip I can give is: invest in Popularity. Tomorrow my level 5 Stadium will finish - this will give me a great income source. So, just for sake of being open here are my financial stats this season:
Income:
Sponsoring: € 2 552 320
Stadium income: € 4 821 046
Transfer income: € 2 649 551
TV-revenue: € 1 295 314
Prize money: € 587 230
Costs:
Player wages: € 1 438 542
Maintenance costs: € 3 820 015
Construction costs: € 6 419 365
So you see Stadium Income is the major income source for me. So really try to sell all Tickets - this will boost your popularity and in turn increase your stadium income. With Stadium 3 (4k people) it starts to create real income and each upgrade after that is just awesome.
So no matter what strategy you use - I don't know what's best - the one thing everyone should do is selling tickets.
