The worry about Coronavirus-2019 (198)

tr Mavi >> saturday march 28 - 00:06

Actually it is 0.5 % of deaths so far in Italy. But still tragic. Just wanted to correct the math.

First of all, let's watch our language.
Secondly, Numpty was referring to the percentage of doctors that died in Italy. 46 out of 9134 ... which is indeed 0.5%.

Pneumonia always need hospital treatment, no matter it's flu pneumonia or this virus. If you don't have pneumonia you can stay at home

Each country has it's own criteria for who gets tested, and also different reporting methods, so you can't simply look at the ratio of confirmed cases and deaths.

Here are the latest figures (28-3-20) for the top 20 countries with the greatest number of officially confirmed cases.

Country - Cases - Deaths

  • USA 104,537 - 1,703
  • Italy 86,498 - 9,134
  • China 82,215 - 3,301
  • Spain 65,719 - 5,138
  • Germany 50,871 - 351
  • France 32,964 - 1,995
  • Iran 32,332 - 2,378
  • UK 14,543 - 759
  • Switzerland 12,928 - 231

Perhaps a better way of viewing the statistics is to look at the number of confirmed cases per population. This will better indicate how widespread it is in the country.

For countries with more than 1,000 cases:

Country - Cases - Deaths - Cases per 1M population

  • Luxembourg - 1,605 - 15 - 2,564
  • Switzerland - 13,138 - 237 - 1,518
  • Italy - 86,498 - 9,134 - 1,431
  • Spain - 65,719 - 5,138 - 1,406
  • Austria - 7,712 - 68 - 856
  • Norway - 3,780 - 20 - 697
  • Germany - 53,340 - 395 - 637
  • Belgium - 7,284 - 289 - 628
  • France - 32,964 - 1,995 - 505
  • Netherlands - 8,603 - 546 - 502
  • Ireland - 2,121 - 22 - 430
  • Portugal - 4,268 - 76 - 419
  • Israel - 3,460 - 12 - 400
  • Iran - 32,332 - 2,378 - 385
  • Denmark - 2,046 - 52 - 353
  • USA - 104,256 - 1,704 - 315
  • Sweden - 3,069 - 105 - 304
  • Czechia - 2,422 - 9 - 226
  • UK - 14,543 - 759 - 214
  • S. Korea - 9,478 - 144 - 185

There is no consistency where these statistics are concerned. Even within a country, let alone between countries, so comparions are full of errors and are going to be far from accurate. Ball park figures at best.

Yeah, agreed. At best it gives an indication of what things are like in each country. When you take the population into account it gives a very different look to some of the data.

There are a lot of misleading statistics quoted, or misquoted, mainly by media outlets. It seems anyone working in the media with a modicom odf statistical awareness is self isolating without an Internet connection.

x number have died from Covid-19 reported by one can be a different  number quoted by another. Some report all deaths to be from Covid-19, others may separate those with underlying causes exacerbated by Covid-19.

Rarely is the number of deaths compared to the average mortality rate in a country so a comaprison of the relative effect can be made.

Media outlets are going for sensationalism, as normal. The tabloids as usual are the worse culprits but I expect better of some of the more respected news outlets.

In total confirmed cases or per capita cases, the Netherlands isn't that bad. In deaths per capita it is a whole different picture though. Germany has more cases, also in terms of total population, but way less deaths.

This is just the result of Germany testing a lot and The Netherlands barely testing anyone. The thing closes to actual spread would be to compare the number of deaths/capita adjusted for the average (or median? idk what would be better) of people in that country. Then you start to get numbers that are somewhat comparable.

I'm not entirely clear what you mean by the adjustment. But here are the death rates per head of population.

Current Worldwide totals:

  • Officially confirmed cases 614,811 (massively under reported)
  • Total deaths 28,269
  • Serious or critical cases 23,997
  • Cases per 1M population 78.9
  • Deaths per 1M population 3.6

For countries with more than 50 deaths, (under 50 in brackets):

Country - Deaths - Deaths per 1M population

  • (San Marino - 21 - 619)
  • Italy - 9,134 - 151
  • Spain - 5,690 - 122
  • Netherlands - 546 - 32
  • France - 1,995 - 31
  • Iran - 2,517 - 30
  • Belgium - 353 - 30
  • Switzerland - 241 - 28
  • (Luxembourg - 15 -24)
  • UK - 759 - 11
  • Portugal - 100 - 10
  • Sweden - 105 - 10
