I would say that Roaming is fine on an attacking midfielder. Give him longshots as well and Roaming might even be useful if he pops up with a few extra goals.

That would have been my thinking as well. I don't really play AMs though, but my wingers (LM/RM) are purely there for going forward. I don't want them to do any defending (mostly because it'll end in tears anyway). Would that still be somewhat worth it, because otherwise I would probably have to go GK on him, which I don't really fancy.

Apologies for not being sufficiently clear.

I tend to use the term 'attacking midfielder' to describe how they are trained (mostly Passing) rather than the exact position that they play in, which can vary with the opponent.  So an attacking mid could play in any of AM/LAM/RAM/CM/RM/LM, which is pretty much anywhere apart from the DM position.

My thinking being that a good Passing player with Roaming can still be useful wherever he wanders on the pitch. If he goes deep he can collect the ball from the defence and come forward or if he wanders up front he can create and also score more goals especially if he has Longshots. It's a case of trying to turn Roaming into a positive attribute. 

Another option would be to train him as a defensive mid with longshots, where going forward could also be useful. But I think the attacking mid is the best option. (Apart from GK of course).

I pretty much felt like that's what you meant and it's also how I would use the term (although I have been known to use the non-existent term "attacking-minded midfielder" on occasion), but I like the fact that you took the time to explain.
