Country name change (12)

ph meow the cat >> Суббота Май 4 - 09:41

Just a little change, but not really a big deal for us.

Swaziland is already called "Eswatini"

Macedonia is now "North Macedonia"

Are you sure about that?

As far as I know the official name in English is still the Czech Republic. Czechia is simply the short form.

Czechia is the official English name specified by the Czech government and preferred by them, and is now used on most official documents instead of Czech Republic.

I've just checked this out on various web sites.

The official, correct, name is still the Czech Republic. So the name has not changed.

But Czechia is now the approved and preferred short form for use in English.

So we should change France to 'The French Republic' by the same standard, Germany becomes 'The Federal Rebuplic of Germany', Poland becomes 'Republic of Poland'... you get the point.

Czechia is to the Czech Republic as Spain is to the Kingdom of Spain. We don't do that to other country names so let's go with the official shortened version just like with any other country.

I've no argument with you. It makes sense to use Czechia.

I'm simply clearing up the fact that the name has not actually changed. They have recently, as of 2016, adopted an approved short form.

Short forms for other countries have been in common usage for much longer. Although for some countries we do still use a long version, such as the Republic of Ireland.

Many languages have had a name similar to Czechia for the country since Czechoslovakia separated, English was just a bit behind tongue-out Republic of Ireland is used to avoid confusion between Ireland (the country) and Ireland (the island) since they, much to my and many others' dismay innocent, don't cover the same area even though in common usage people still use Ireland to refer to the republic without much confusion because often the context is pretty clear.

But on topic, the update is that English speakers now use the common shortened version of the country name too, or at least that's the idea, meaning the common name in English changed/is changing from Czech Republic to Czechia. It's still an update and RS is just 3 years late. So 'Czech republic is now Czechia' is completely correct.

Guys, can we just stick to the topic, please..

Also, the game follows FIFA and confederations' rules, UEFA still use the term "Czech Republic" (Yeah I admit that Slovakia, in the case in beauty pageants use the term Slovak Republic. But it's still Slovakia). Czechia was never used in any of the matches in either UEFA or FIFA yet.

Eswatini is now already used, but different code - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cePe1z1SyKo

I'm not pretty sure about Macedonia tho, since I watched recent matches and they still use Macedonia.
