Summary of Season (91)

us Ulysses >> 週三 十月 16 - 01:10
Season 5 has been highlighted by an exciting, the first Champions League champion from the United States, the emergence of a few internationally elite teams from the United States, a general increase of competitiveness in the United States league, and a few other surprises. The United States league has gotten more competitive overall with the influx of the best teams from division 2 and the elimination of botteams and dead teams. Here are the highlights.

Most Popular Teams

Unsurprisingly, the top 4 teams continue to be the top 4 most popular teams, followed by 3 other teams from what I am calling the original 5 (Las Vegas Devils/Union/St. Louis Rams/Seattle Cataclysm/Tornado). 5 teams from the United States are in the top 10 in North America. The Seattle Cataclysm are second behind Mississauga United and among the top 50 in the world.

U21

SFVP projects to win both the United States league and the u21 league, which is not surprising given the quality of youth players on their team. The U21 league finally has 16 teams (it has come a long way from its origin as a league of 4 or so teams that had to combine with the division 2 league).

Records

SFVP and Enhac Kavey have established record records for the most points in a season. SFVP set the record, but Enhac Kavey's record is second place all-time.

It follows that SFVP set the record for the most TV revenue, breaking the $2 million barrier.

Phuong of SFVP and H. Nguyen of Enhac Kavey have also tied for the record for the most goals scored in a season (41).

Champions League

69 teams from 20 leagues competed in the Champions League. Against insurmountable odds, all 4 from the United States managed to make the quarterfinals, and three of them made it to the semifinals. There are a few elite teams from leagues like Canada and Jamaica, but the United States is emerging to the strongest league in the North American region, led by the Enhac Kavey, Seattle Cataclysm, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and SFVP. It still has a long way to go to catch up to leagues like China and the Netherlands. The United States teams only lost one out of 24 games in the group stage (and the Seattle Cataclysm lost due to playing its prospects after already having clinched the round of 16). The SFVP were the favorites to win, but were unlucky to draw Enhac Kavey in the quarterfinals, losing to the eventual Champions. Enhac Kavey then had to defeat an extremely talented Seattle Cataclysm and then Jamaican Warrior team to claim the title as the first champion from the United States (or outside of Canada for that matter). Phuong of SFVP and H. Nguyen of Enhac Kavey were among the leading goal scorers and R. Nguyen of SFVP and P. Nguyen of Enhac Kavey were among the leading playmakers.

North American League

Phap Phu United were upset early on, and the Cattle Grinders didn't make it past the group stage. The defending champs, the St. Louis Rams were upset by a Guatemalan team while Tornado suffered an unfortunate draw against a very talented Impact. The Las Vegas Devils managed to carry the torch for the United States as a sort of cinderella team. They gave up a draw in each of the playoffs leading up to the group stage and barely won the provisional fifth ticket to the North American League granted to the United States due to its relative success in last year's international leagues. They barely made it through each of the rounds leading up to the finals, either drawing or winning by only 1 or 2 goals (2-0 and 1-0, 1-1 and 2-1, 3-2 and 2-0, and 3-2 and ?). Even so, they've managed to earn their way to being a win away from the North American league championship. While the Devils don't have the most dangerous offense, their goaltending, defense, and opportune goal scoring have carried them to the verge of two titles this season. They have 2 players in the top 10 for both goal scoring and playmaking.

Cup

While the 4 best teams from the United States who were realistically among the favorites to win from the start were successful in the Champions League, the Cup was much less predictable. The SFVP lost early on in a shocking upset by Real Madrid. Real Madrid boasted a former goaltender from the United States national team and the SFVP tried to get through with their prospects, only to be upset. The upset was especially surprising since the SFVP have historically been among the most successful in the Cup. Enhac Kavey who have never managed to put everything together for the one game elimination pandemonium that is the Cup, were upset by the strong defense and opportune scoring of the Las Vegas Devils. Another contender, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds faced a difficult draw early on against the Seattle Cataclysm. From the quarterfinals, all of the main contenders other than the Seattle Cataclysm had been upset, leaving surprise teams like Kandokan, Sai Gon United, and the Las Vegas Devils who had not been having a successful regular season as the main competitors. The path was paved for a second Cup victory for the Seattle Cataclysm, and they capitalized on their chance, though the Las Vegas Devils certainly made it an exciting contest by drawing the match through 2 overtimes and penalty kicks despite being outshot by a large margin. Beckham of the Las Vegas Devils was the leading goal scorer with 6 goals.

The following is an overview of the state of the division 1 teams (and potential future division 1 teams) from season 5:

1) SFVP

Phuong tied for first with 41 goals and R. Nguyen was second among playmakers with 21 assists. SFVP becomes the second team from the United States to win both the league and the Cup. The SFVP have been a very strong contender for the last 3 seasons since promoting and finally put everything together this season to take first. SFVP has a very talented team now, but they also have a very promising future. SFVP has a prospect at every position that could be a starter on most teams in the United states. They could be truly dangerous if they ever decide to add an elite keeper. SFVP boasts players from the national teams of Vietnam (3), Liechtenstein, United States, Mexico, Turks and Caicos Islands, New Zealand, and Costa Rica (9 total). SFVP derives its current success from its multitude of quality created players. SFVP has made 2 big recent acquisitions including a defense prospect and striker prospect. SFVP is also the manager of the Vietnam national team. They are one of two teams in the United States with a level 7 youth center. They will be back in the Champions League next year.

2) Enhac Kavey

H. Nguyen tied for first with 41 goals, and P. Nguyen was first with 23 assists. Also of note were the 16 assists by H. Nguyen and 15 clean slates by Carpentier. The Enhac Kavey will forever be the first Champions League champions from the United States. They are also the first team to score 100 goals in the United States in one season. They also set a record for goal differential. They have been a top team in the league since promoting 2 seasons ago. They have a total of 5 players on national teams, all playing for the United States. Like the SFVP, the success of the Enhac Kavey starts with their talented and relatively young created players. The Enhac Kavey boast the majority of the prolific Nguyen family. They are truly full of Nguyen. Like the SFVP, the Enhac Kavey have a prolific youth program and will continue to be a top team for many years. They have made 2 major acquisitions, including a midfield prospect and a defense prospect. They have the only level 7 training center in the United States and will return to the Champions League next year. Like the SFVP, they could become even more dangerous by adding an elite keeper.

3) Seattle Cataclysm

Of note from the Seattle Cataclysm are playmaker Ameen (18 assists), goaltender Alamada (11 clean slates), and backup goaltender Regueiro (8 clean slates). Over the course of the first 5 season, Regueiro has been the most successful backup goaltender, repeatedly finding his way into the top 10 despite being a backup (with 46 total clean slates). He could probably start for many teams in the United States and has a bright future. Almada has 65 total clean slates and is arguably the strongest goaltender in the United States. Despite their success, another keeper, Josh Vernon, has the potential to become one of the best keepers in the world (he already led the Bermudans to an upset against the heavily favored Canadian national team in the North American Qualification tournament) and will take over as the backup for the Cataclysm at 20 years old. The Cataclysm have had 14 national team players over the course of the season and currently have 12, including players from Venezuela (the starting goaltender), Bermuda (the starting goaltender and star player at midfield), Canada (including the star defensemen and the former face of the Seattle Cataclysm, striker Oliver Giroux), Chile (including the star defenseman and a starting midfielder), United States (including reserve defenseman Bishop and Hargraves who has been cut from the team for his weak work ethic), Sweden (including the second best player), Panama (including the star player Silvano Kiko, the star forward, and another future starting forward), and Costa Rica (including Lugano who has been tabbed as a future starter). At one point, all of the starters were on national teams. Fans have been upset by the departure of stars Darren Scrope (midfield), Matt Fear (defense), and Oliver Giroux (offense), but are excited by the additions of Gustavo Smith (defense), Ameen (midfield), and Chio (offense). Giroux in particular will be missed by fans having scored 156 goals in 158 games for the Cataclysm. Laurent will also soon be replaced by the very promising Chantaca who played in Italy this year. Chio in particular was possible the biggest acquisition in the world during the midseason transfer window. After much negotiation and the failure of negotiations for a promising 4 star 19 year old from Argentina, Chio joined the Cataclysm for just under $5 million and will join a triumvirate with Phuong and H. Nguyen next season. He was a goal out of the top 10 having played in only 17 games this season. This season also saw the production of 2 true supertalents from the Seattle Cataclysm youth center. Also of note has been the continued contribution of the side defenders to the Cataclysm's goal totals. The highlight of the Cataclysm season was their 2nd cup win. The cataclysm have made it 2 the finals of the Cup for 3 years in a row (and made it to the semifinals during the first Cup). The Cataclysm have a great set of prospects to continue their success, starting with Vernon, Chantaca, Lugano, and new created player Orlando Gardiner. The Seattle Cataclysm are a member of the Original 5 and will be a contender for first with the addition of Chio and should not be underestimated based on their result from this season. They will also return to the Champions League. The manager of the Seattle Cataclysm also manages the Chilean national team. The Seattle Cataclysm will start next season with one of 2 level 5 stadiums in the United States.

4) Pittsburgh Riverhounds

Notable from the Riverhounds are playmaker Craighill (15 assists) and keeper Houcins) 12 clean slates). The manager of the Riverhounds has been successful and active managing the United States National Team, surprisingly taking them to the quarterfinals of the World Cup last season. Though they have been something of a 4th wheel since promoting in season 3, the Riverhounds franchise has been a model for success by building their stadium, actively marketing, and getting a bid in for a lot of the quality prospects that manage to hit the market. If the Riverhounds aren't yet an elite team according to the scouts who evaluate players (and their results suggest that they are anyway), they soon will be due to their devotion to finding talented young players. The Riverhounds were the first team to build a level 5 stadium in the United States, beating the Cataclysm by a few weeks. The Riverhounds barely missed out on the finals of the Champions League this year. They boast national team players from the United States (4), Wales, Mali, US Virgin Islands, and Armenia (8 total). They picked up a talented midfield prospect this season and will return to the Champions League next year.

5) St. Louis Rams

The first champion of the North American league and first international champion from the United States failed to repeat this year. Of note from the Rams is their keeper who earned 13 clean slates. The Rams are another member of the Original 5. Led by superstar midfielder Murphy, the Rams were on the verge of moving up a tier this year. The Rams also seem to have a quality youth program. The Rams boast a player on United states national team and will return to the North American League.

6) Tornado

The former league champion Tornado are headlined by Latvian star Upitis. They are another member of the Original 5. They made a late surprise bid for a ticket to the Champions League, but failed to win their last 2 games and will settle for another chance at the North American League. The Tornado have an older team but have quietly built the groundwork for a promising youth program with one of 2 level 7 youth centers in the United States.

7) Talent Kids FC

The Talent Kids FC are headlined by Wilson who scored 25 goals. In their second season in the top league, they've joined the mid-tier teams and will get a shot at the North American League next year. The Talent Kids have quite a few talented kids, starting with phenom Chym Viet Nam. They have 2 players on the Vietnam national team and one on the UAE national team. They will need to find someone to supplement help out Wilson next year.

8) Union

The fourth member of the Original 5 famous for somehow converting famous politicians into successful soccer players has quietly been building one of the more talented franchises in the United States, one capable of winning in low scoring games and upsetting just about any other team. The key to their team is their keeper from the U.S. national team. Even against the teams with a lot of expensive contracts, their keeper is capable of singlehandedly making a contest out of any match. They also have a player on the national team of the Turks and Caicos Islands. They also have a promising youth program. They will compete in the North American League next year.

9) Kandokan

In their first season in the top league, Kandokan has earned a spot in the North American League. They boast four national team players from Vietnam (2), Belize, and Mexico.

10) Los Angeles FC

With the rise of the Seattle Cataclysm, it seemed that they would dominate the United States league uncontested. Cincinnati FC (later Columbus FC) swiftly became the main rival of the Cataclysm early on. They were second place for both of the first two seasons and participated in the first Champions League. They only managed to get the last ticket for the North American league after the 3rd season and continued to decline. This is of course not the fault of the current manager. The decline of the franchise started with the abrupt and surprising departure of the management of the club in season 3. The new manager inherited a talented team built around a talented goaltender (though their all-star forward and a few others left the team due to the lack of support from the original management). The Seattle Cataclysm actually bid on the same goaltender and was forced to find an alternative (Almada) in time to compete for the next season; otherwise Regueiro would be the starter for the Cataclsym. They are not a member of the Original 5 due to the change in management but have still been a division 1 team for all 5 seasons. Despite their recent difficulties, they have remained competitive and promise to rebuild in time.

11) Cross F.C.

Cross F.C. boast national team players from the United States and Senegal. They managed to stay in division 1 after their first season.

12) Las Vegas Devils

The final member of the Original 5, the Devils have severely underperformed in season 5 despite actually having a relatively talented team. They are a strong team defensively but haven't gotten the offensive support they needed to be more successful. Even so, the potential of the team showed as they managed to come within a few penalty kicks of a Cup title and will officially face the defending champions of the Champions league, the Impact, in the North American League finals as they try to keep the title in the United States. They somehow managed to upset Enhac Kavey on the way. They boast national team players from England, Vanuatu, Monsterrat, and Tahiti. They also have strong goaltending and a promising youth movement. They acquired a 4 star midfielder, O'Calohan, to help their cause.

13) Phap Phu United

While the franchise has been a division 1 team for all 5 season, they have not continuously had the same management. Also known as Chym Ha Noi, SF Chym SC, and San Francisco, they were a top 4 team during season 1. They have struggled since season 1, but did manage to earn a North American League berth last year. They boast 2 players from the Vietnam national team and have an especially promising group of prospects headlined by the promising defender Phuong, though they've sold a few promising player to focus on building infrastructure.

14) Sai Gon United

They are the third team to have played in division 1 for 5 seasons but under different managers, formerly the Ace United who were one of the more dangerous teams in the league. They have an older team and boast a goaltender from the Mexican national team.

15) New York Red Bulls

They promoted after the first season, demoted after season 3, promoted again after season 4, and demoted again this season. Expect to see them back in division 1 for season 7. They are an older team. They were a contender in the first Champions League.

16) Cattle Grinders

While the Las Vegas Devils had some success to counter their lackluster regular season, the Cattle Grinders have been a major surprise in the cellar. They promoted in the first season and have been one of the more talented teams ever since. They were a contender in the last 2 North American Leagues. They have an older team but have a lot of prospects primed to eventually take over. They still seem to be active and will likely return to division 1 eventually.

League 2:

The New York Cosmos look dangerous and should at least be a contender for the North American League. Three other popular teams have a chance of promotion: the Glenndale Bunnies, Rocky Mountain Huskies, and Atlantis Burn (formerly #3 Oakland from season 1 which was the most successful botteam in the history of division 1).

Season 6

The United States has built upon its success from Season 5 in Season 6. The United States won its second Champions League and North American League titles. With its success on the international stage, the United States continues to have some of the better teams in the game, if not necessarily the very best. The top league has finally reached the point where it contains the majority of the best teams in the United States as it continues to become more competitive. Here are the highlights of season 6.

I) League:
SFVP won its second consecutive league title, tying the Seattle Cataclysm for the most league titles in the United States. SFVP scored a record 120 goals in the process of winning the league. There are now 8 teams in the United States with some sort of league, cup, or international title. There were 6 teams above .500 this season. There are still 5 original teams with their original manager and name in league 1 (Seattle Cataclysm, St. Louis Rams, Tornado, Union, and Las Vegas Devils).

II) Cup:
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds won their first Cup this year, finally taking away the titles from the Seattle Cataclysm and SFVP, who have dominated the Cup for most of its existence. The Riverhounds beat the Cataclysm in an exciting back and forth match. The Riverhounds opened the scoring only to give up the tying goal and retake the lead a few times. They managed to score a very late game winning goal. The Cataclysm outshot the Riverhounds in the final game. The Cataclysm used an unexpected offensive formation with no DM's against the Riverhounds who used a defensive formation as they prevailed. This was the 4th consecutive appearance for the Cataclysm in the Cup finals. The finals were hosted by former Champion Los Angeles FC. Since both the Riverhounds and the Cataclysm will be playing in the Champions the league, the 6th North American League ticket will go to 10th place Los Angeles FC.

Enhac Kavey was upset early in the quarterfinals due to an unlucky draw against SFVP, who went on to lose to the Riverhounds. The cinderella team, Demacia FC somehow snuck into the semifinals, losing to the Cataclysm 3-1. Demacia FC also promoted to league 2 this season.

Next year's tournament will be hosted by the Seattle Cataclysm.

III) Champions League:
The finals were hosted by the Seattle Cataclysm (for the second time). SFVP, Enhac Kavey, the Seattle Cataclysm, and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will all return for the third consecutive year next year.

In a tournament of 66 teams, 3 teams from the United States made it to the semifinals. The Seattle Cataclysm lost to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the quarterfinals. Peter Nguyen of Enhac Kavey lead the tournament with 14 assists. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds won the tournament for the United States for the second year in a row, beating the Seattle Cataclysm, SFVP, and the Kingston Big Eaters (a formerly elite team who beat Enhac Kavey) in the last 3 rounds to win the tournament.

IV) North American League:
The Talent Kids FC beat Kandokan to win the second North American League title for the United States. The Las Vegas Devils were finalists in the only other North American League finals. The St. Louis Rams (former champions) also made it to the semifinals. 4 teams from the United States made it to the quarterfinals. 5 teams from the United States made it to the round of 16. All 6 teams from the United States advanced past the group stage into the round of 32. Andy Wilson lead the tournament with 21 goals, Chym Viet Nam lead the tournament with 14 assists, and Antonio Ayoroa lead the tournament with 13 clean sheets. All three played for the tournament champion Talent Kids FC. The tournament finals were hosted by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Next year's tournament finals will be hosted by SFVP.

V) North American Championships:
As the host of the tournament, the United States earned a bye into the tournament, bypassing the qualifications. All of the games were played in various stadiums from the United States, providing the hosts with a few extra hundreds of thousands of dollars for the end of the season transfer window.

The United States has made it to the semifinals, where it got the best possible matchup against Honduras. The United States proceeded to beat Honduras and then Costa Rica to take the title. Costa Rica beat Cuba to make it into the finals.

The United States has one of the best national teams. It is nearly in the top 10 and has a lot of 6 star players as well as talented young players. With all of the quality youth centers, including at least 3-4 level 8 youth centers by next season, as well as the many players with highly trained fixed attributes, the future looks promising.

The United States is the fourth most successful country in individual international tournaments, behind China, the Netherlands, and Argentina.

VI) U21 Tournament:

The inaugural U-21 Domestic Cup has been organized by ranks39 of FC Appleton 13.

VII) Popularity:
It's no surprise that the 4 most consistently successful teams are also the 4 most popular teams in the United States. The Seattle Cataclysm and Pittsburgh Riverhounds are both among the top 50 most popular teams in the world.

VIII) Club World Cup:
Enhac Kavey took fourth place in the world in the inaugural Club World Cup in Norway for all of the Champions League champions. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will represent North America in next season's Club World Cup in Pakistan.

XI) Top Players:

Rankings are based solely on star value. Players under 21 get half of their gray star value. The lower age is the tie breaker. These rankings are based on current value rather than potential. There are currently 25 gold-star caliber players in the United States.

Overall:
1) Chym Van Phuong (Enhac Kavey)
2) Harry Nguyen (Enhac Kavey)
3) Mojtaba Oulhaj (Atletico Chay Coi)
4) Henry Nguyen (Enhac Kavey)

2) Holger Nguyen (Enhac Kavey)
3) Jing-Xiang Chio (Seattle Cataclysm)
4) Gustav Grossman (SFVP)
5) Santino Gandarilla (Enhac Kavey)

XII) Power Rankings

These rankings are based on a general impression based on the star values of the players on the rosters and the facilities. It is not my intention to cause anyone offense. With the right acquisitions, most teams could probably change positions a lot and contend for a Champion’s League ticket. The league is becoming increasingly competitive. SFVP and Enhac Kavey are probably the favorites by a decent margin; Enhac Kavey's new keeper will significantly improve its chances. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the Seattle Cataclysm are probably the favorites to take the other two champions league tickets again, but there will be at least a few more serious contenders next season.

Thanks for the record-keeping, Ulysses. The list of best players really tells a story. All the best players are on the few top teams, with really very few exceptions. That's not surprising, but it's interesting to see it presented this way. Speaking on behalf of the minnows, we have a long way to go, but the gap is not likely to be closing, and the opposite is probably true.
I'm not complaining at all, just making an observation. For my club, I'm happy just to get to play against all these star players and fill my stadium and keep the cash flowing. If the clubs at the top are running away from the rest, I want to hitch on to that train.

At the very least, playing in a league full of popular teams, you will probably be able to upgrade your stadium and fan shop faster if you can afford it.

To be fair, these lists are based on star value. A player with a better primary attribute and decent other attributes can be better than a player with better star value.

In addition, star value still tends to be a bit inflated by training fixed attributes. This is one of the primary ways for newer teams to get at least a few star players (though the ability to do this has been limited with the changes made to the game) to use or to sell for a ton.

My own team has fallen behind a bit by focusing on special attributes instead of fixed attributes and keeping mostly the same team together (though I may have a firesale if the next generation is finally ready next season). In addition, I have conserved my credits to make a few 350 credit players that are just now on the verge of making my team while other teams have a lot of 250 and 150 credit stars, and my 350 credit players may not be as effective as I had hoped against the increasingly good players from youth centers.

Good job, Ulysses. Though I expected a long summary :3

@Cooper: Keepers play a great role these days. If you cant afford a better GK, you could loan one. This transfer period, I saw about 3-4 GK around 4.5 blocking. The low popularity clubs tend to be easier to loan anyway. Next season, with skill that counter corner rampage, good GK'll help you upset top team :3

Thanks for the summary Ulysses. It's pretty sad to see my player on top of every single position but the performance is like crap..

Thank you for pulling this together, Ulysses. It is interesting to see the player progression from year-to-year. I am curious if our top players are improving at a similar rate as other leagues. I have a couple of current players who would have been listed on the season 13 rankings but are a half star off of the season 14 rankings. It is good to see our player quality improving, even if my players aren't surpassing others. For me it reinforces my need to improve my training center (40 something days away from completion). Along these lines I was curious of our league's facility levels.
