Cambuur journal - season 2 (22)

sco Arno Wiersma >> thursday april 4 - 15:06
After becoming champion of the Second League, Cambuur will this season participate in the Dutch First League. Even though some see Cambuur as an outsider for the title, Cambuur's management has issued a statement that its goal is to remain in the First League, and if possible participate in the battle for a European ticket.

Cambuur has invested mainly in its youth this summer. The line up of Cambuur is very similar of that of the team that won the Second League.

The new season started with a Cup match. In the second round of the Cup Cambuur played a home match against Third League SC Hellendoorn.

After the opening minutes Cambuur opened the score, when Chidambaram powered a corner by Azcagorta in the net. SC Hellendoorn replied with a goal attempt, but Milunović easily grabbed the header by Zimberline. Nobel then showed his skills at the other side of the pitch, with a clean finish after a good pass by Kinte.

Kamerling made it 3 up after 22 minutes, when Wouda gave him a chance he could not miss. SC Hellendoorn had troubles keeping the ball away from its own goal; they hardly passed into Cambuur's half of the field. Just before halftime Cambuur was rewarded for keeping Hellendoorn under pressure. Chidambaram made his second goal of the eavening, again from a corner situation.

With a 4-0 lead half at half time, the match was played. Cambuur suffered a setback as Cammock, who had replaced Milunović at half time, had to leave the field injured. As Cambuur had already userd all its options to substitute, the team had to continue with 10 players. It soon became 10 against 10 though, when Wijnberg made a bizarre foul on Kuyt.

Cambuur remained the dominant team, and made a fifth in the 65th minute. This time another defender scored from a corner; Cubas made his first goal of the season.

With Hellendoorn unable to reach the Cambuur goal, and Cambuur waisting a couple of chances, the score remained at 5-0.

Cambuur's first League match was away to GAE Deventer. Cambuur started this match excellent; in the 7th minute Nobel gave Cambuur the lead. This signaled the home team to step up the pace. The home team was slightly dominant in the first half, but neither team scored a goal before half time.

In the second half dissaster stuck for Cambuur as Chidambaram deposited a corner behind his own keeper. And 4 minutes later GAE Deventer had turned the tables completely as IJsselmuiden scored from a free kick that had hit the wall.

Cambuur now had no pick up the pace, and try to create opportunities to equalize. Cambuur was sloppy though; many crosses failed to reach a team mate. It was a defender who managed to equalize for Cambuur; Chidambaram headed the ball in the goal from a corner. Though GAE Eagles got some chances after the equalizer, the score remained unchanged and Cambuur took a point back to Leeuwarden.

GAE Eagles - Cambuur 2-2 (0-1)

85. 2-2 Chidambaram

The first home match of the season, and not just a game. Neighbour SC Dokkum payed a visit to 't Woanskip-stadium for the Derby of the North.

In the beginning of the match Dokkum proved to be the more dangerous team. After Azcagorta unnessesarily lost posession midfield, a fast attack allowed Plouviez to open the score.

The home team kept its cool though. The team managed to score 88 goals last season, so a goal down is not something the team is unable to repair. It took only 5 minutes to undo the damage; Kamerling score after a perfect assist from fellow striker Nobel.

After this goal the home team became more dominant. This resulted in a beautifull goal by Nobel in the 25th minute.

Cambuur then lost the control they had. And open match ensued, in which both teams got their chances. No goals were scored though untill half time.

The second half again started with a strong SC Dokkum. After a dangerous free kick yielded a corner, Plouviez converted this corners into the equalizer.

The home team then put pressure on the guests from Dokkum, but didn't manage to covert any of the chances into a lead. Just as the offensive seemed to be fading, Nobel showed his skilles again after Kamerling gave him a perfect assist.

Cambuur took control again, although Dokkum got some chances as well. Victory was secured by Chidambaram, who couldn't miss after a perfect corner from Azcagorta. Dokkum tried to create a final offensive, but no more goals were scored.

Cambuur - SC Dokkum 4-2 (2-1)
10. 0-1 Plouviez

Game three brough a visit to FC Ede. Followers of the league have not envisioned a high ranking for this team. But they started with a home win against SC Gilze en Rijen, and the lost away to title contender Lost Keys United. Not a bad start for FC Ede, so Cambuur's coach had warned his players: Do not expect an easy game.

The words of the Cambuur coach seemed to have made little impression on the Cambuur team. Cambuur played a lousy first half, in which it took the team 19 minutes to fire a first shot at Smaalegange, who defended the Ede goal. Fortunately, Ede's first half was not much better. Going into half time scoreless was the logical result.

The angry speach of the Cambuur coach during the break seemed to have been effective, as Cambuur grabbed the initiative in the beginning of the second half. In the first 10 minutes they fired more shots on the Ede goal then they did in the entire first half. More importantly, Nobel made a goal in the 53rd minute, after receiving a clear cut assist from the experienced Kuyt.

That goal however doused any fire the Cambuur players had in their bellies, and the game fell back into the dismall state of the first half. Chances were few on both sides, with Ede producing the majority of them. The low point moment of the match was the yellow card Nobel received for theatrically tripping, in an attempt to get a penatly.

The second half produced no more goals. Cambuur took three important points back to Leeuwarden, but the team will need to perform much better in next matches if they want to end up in the top half of the League.

FC Ede - Cambuur 0-1 (0-0)
53. 0-1 Nobel

The match in the third round of the Cup was a memorable one. VV Rijsoord, also playing in the League, visited Leeuwarden.

Cambuur started the game full of confidence, but suffered its first blow after only 5 minutes. Ingols had to leave the field injured. And only 10 minutes later the guests took the lead. Vamsi converted Rijsoord's second chance of the match.

Cambuur was the more dangerous team in the remainder of the first half, though opportunities were scarce. One of them was converted by Nobel to make it even again.

During half time Cambuur made two other subsitutions. And then dissaster struc. Just 2 minutes into the second half Roding had to leave the field injured. But even with a player down Cambuur remaind the dominant team.

This lasted until the 70th minute as dissaster struck again. Azcagorta was injured badly, and Cambuur had to continue with 9 players. But even with 2 players down Cambuur was the more dangerous team.

No goals were scored though, and the game went into over time. And as if Cambuur hadn't suffered enough yet, Chidambaram had to leave the field in the 94th minute with a very serious injury. He will be out of play for over 9 weeks.

Rijsoord seemed not to know what to do with their superiour numbers. In the 98th minute Nobel managed to score his second goal and put Cambuur in the lead.

It was to be expected that Rijsoord would create some more chances, but the guests were very sloppy. Against all odds the 8 Cambuur players managed to hang on to the lead and reach the next round of the Cup.

A highly improvised Cambuur met Alphen City FC in the fourth round of the League. Cambuur had to do without the injured Chidambaram and Azcagorta, as well as Kuyt, who needed rest after the last series of matches. The team was supplemented with talented youth players. The coach had selected a different type of line up, in the hopes of suprising the guests.

After some initial skirmishes, Cambuur took the lead. Kamerling finished a perfect assist from Frechette to give Cambuur the lead.

After the goal the sold out stadium watched an open match with chances on both sides. Cambuur proved to be the more effective team, as it converted one of the chances in a second goal. Nobel doubled Cambuur's lead in the 33rd minute. At half time Cambuur still led by 2-0.

The second half showed a stronger Cambuur, that created more chances then the guests from Alphen. But a foul from Krap in the box led to a penalty that was converted by Kraakman.

This goal did not change the game much. Cambuur remained the dominant team. Unfortunately Cubas made a bizarre foul just before the end of the match and received a red card for that. Cambuur will have to do without him in the next matches.

SC Gilze en Rijen is a team with a French touch to it; the club has 7 French and 3 Belgian players. It is a team that Cambuur is expected to beat, but there often is a substantial gap between the expectations and reality.

Cambuur started this match without Chidambaram and Azcagorta, who were still injured. But Kuyt was able to play again fortunately.

Cambuur started a bit sloppy, but soon took control and started to create chances. After 17 minutes this payed off; Kamerling scored after an assist by Kinte. Gilze en Rijen was close to the equalizer in the next attack, but Milunović was at his post. The remainder of the first half didn't produce a lot of exitement.

Cambuur started the second half poorly, as Wouda made a bizarre foul and was sent off. Nevertheless, Cambuur dominated the next 20 minutes. Several good chances were created, but also waisted. After 20 minutes into the second half Gilze en Rijen wrestled themselves free from Cambuur's pressure, and created some chances of their own.

Kameling made a liberating second goal 6 minutes before time. With a 0-2 lead Cambuur's win was secure. No further chances were created by either team.

Just before the home match against Lost Keys United, one of the favorites in the League, Cambuur was fortunate to be able to secure the services of Sean Kelly. Kelly will be a valuable addition to Cambuur's midfield.

As said before, Lost Keys United is one of the strongest teams in the League. But Cambuur is not easily beaten at home. In a nearly full stadium, the visitors had trouble getting into play. Quite a few passes failed. Cambuur did much better. Both teams created some chances, the best of them for Cambuur. Neither team managed to score before half time.

The second half started well for Cambuur. After clearing a Lost Keys United corner, Nobel scored the first goal of the match. The assist was for Kelly, who already proved his added value to the team.

The guests had hardly dealt with this blow, or Kamerling made it 2-0. Another perfect pass from Kelly was professionaly finished by the Cambuur forward.

The guests didn't give up though. They stepped up their game, and created chances. They were rewarded in the 81st minute, when Waelkens made it 2-1.

That also was the final score, as the Cambuur defence didn't allow Lost Keys' forwards any more chances.

Cambuur's manager was pleased with the result. He said his team was performing above expectations, but didn't want to speculate on Cambuur's chances of winning the League. He hoped Cambuur could maintain a spot in the top-4 the coming weeks, as a heavy away program awaist the team from Leeuwarden.

The first of a series of away matches led Cambuur to the Dutch capital where Astar awaited. After a few pinnpricks by both sides, Cambuur scored in the 10th minute. Kamerling converted a perfect assist from fellow striker Nobel.

The home team tried step up their game, but weren't able to challenge Cambuur's superiority. The Cambuur forwards however, fired time after time at the Astar goal, but didn't manage to add to add any goals. So at half time Cambuur led with 0-1.

The first chance of the second half was for Astar, but Linkov was unable to circumvent the Cambuur keeper. A couple of minutes later Kamerling showed how this is done on the other side of the pitch. He converted a corner taken by Kelly.

Astar now had to take risks if they wanted to keep at least a point at home. They fired a few shots at Milunović, but these did not worry him. Astar's hopes were crushed by Kroeger in the 64th minute. Kroeger, who substituted Kamerling, showed his scoring skills after Kuyt presented him with a perfect chance.

The remainder of the second half was of little importance. But is was entertaining, as both teams kept creating chances. One more goals was made: Chidambaram only had to walk a perfect corner by Kelly into the goal. Thus the first of three away matches was won.

Astar - Cambuur 0-4 (0-1)

The second match in a series of 3 away matches was played against VV Rijsoord. The teams had met before earlier this season in a Cup match in Leeuwarden. In that memorable game Cambuur won in overtime playing with 3 players down. This second game was played in Ridderkerk.

Though Cambuur started the match well, it was Rijsoord that opened the score. After a stupid foul by Kuyt, which earned him a yellow card, Easton scored from the awarded free kick. Cambuur then slowely took control of the match. A series of chances was missed until Nobel scored the equalizer in the 35th minute. Three minutes later Cambuur took the lead, when Azikiwe passed his own keeper bu deflecting a corner by Azcagorta. That score did not change untill half time.

In the second half Cambuur remained dominant and kept pressure on the Rijsoord goal. The number of chances was staggering, but it wasn't untill the 68th minute before one of them was converted. De Marest scored from a corner.

The goal changed little. Cambuur kept creating chances, and waisting them. Deep in the second half Nobel scored his second to make it 1-4.

After that goal things suddenly went very smoothly. Five minutes later Kroeger made it 1-5. And four minutes later he scored again: 1-6. Just before full time the dangerous forward Baal made it 2-6 from a corner.

The third away match in a series of 3 away matches was a difficult one. Invincible Delft has a strong team that ended fourth last season.

Cambuur had an excelent start to the game. In the 7th minute Kameling scored from a very well excecuted attack. The next part of the game was exciting, but sloppy from both sides. The game went back and forth, but both teams produced many passes that ended up at with an opponent. Fortunately Cambuur created more chances then the home team.

Cambuur increased its lead in the 27th minute, when Chidambaram scored from an Azcagorta corner. And it was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 37th minute. Kamerling went down in the box, but the referee gave him yellow instead of a penalty. Two minutes later it was 1-2. Klinkenberg finished a good attack from Invincible Delft. That was also the score at half time.

The second half started with an offensive by Invincible Delft. The home team got a number of good chances, but failed to score. Cambuur wheatered the storm, and then took control of the match. The team started to create chances again, and rewarded itself in the 79th minute, when Nobel showed strong nerves after receiving a difficult pass from Kelly. Nobel scored a third for Cambuur and that secured the victory.

Cambuur created a few more chances, but the score remained at 1-3. An important victory that gave Cambuur the lead in the league, as Beawulf surprisingly drew ar FC Blijdorp.

Cambuur played FC Weesijn in the third round of the Cup.
This team does quite good in the forth league, and Cambuur had already played 2 league matches in the same week. So the ingredients for an upset were in place. It was up to the team to stay focussed and reach the next round in the Cup.

That focus was somewhat lacking when Weesijn opened the score in the 9th minute. Jensen fooled Milunović and gave Weesijn the lead.

Cambuur was the dominant team after the goal from Jensen. It created a series of chances, but it didn't manage to score until the 41st minute, when Kamerling finised an assist from Kuyt. It was 1-1 at half time.

Cambuur continued in the second half where it had stopped in the first half. It created chances, but failed to score. Weesijn was far more efficient: it's third shot on the Cambuur goal yielded Weesijn's second goal: 1-2.

Weesijn's lead didn't last long. Nobel equalized 10 minutes later. And another five minutes later Cambuur had taken the lead. Cubas scored from a corner.

The outcome of the match was clear when Kamerling scored his second of the eavening. In the remaining time there was not much excitement. Cambuur seemed content with the score, and Weesijn was unable to challenge Cambuur's lead.

After a series of away matches Cambuur played at home again. The opponent was Almere city fc.

Cambuur started well. Kamerling opened the score in the 11th minute. But after the goal Cambuur didn't show its best play. Nevertheless Cambuur made another goal: Nobel finished a difficult pass from Frechette.

The visitors created their share of chances as well, and in the 35th minute Van Saun made it 2-1. Almere's hopes were crushed by Nobel three minutes later, as he made it 3-1 with a header. That also was the score at half time.

In the second half Cambuur started much better. The team fired a large number of volleys on the Almere goal, but didn't manage to pass keeper Van Blerkem. The second part of the second half Almere was the more dangerous team. But Almere didn't manage to score either, so the score remained 3-1.

The away match against FC Hoorn was quite spectacular. Unfortunately there were only 360 people who witnessed the game, but they saw a match to remember.

The home team took the lead early in the match. De Vos scored from a corner in the 6th minute. Cambuur was the stronger team though, and equalized in the 25th minute, when Nobel finished a perfect pass by Chidambaram.

The home team was not impressed, and managed to take the lead again through Brits. After 45 minutes Cambuur was in the lead though, as Kamerling scored twice just before the half time.

When Nobel made it 2-4 8 minutes into the second half, Cambuur seemed to have a decisive lead. But Hoorn showed character, and pulled one back when Schelde fooled Cambuur goalie Milunović.

Cambuur remained the more dangerous team though, and increased its lead just before the final whistle, when Kroeger made it 3-5.

After the match the Cambuur manager said the neutral spectator was the big winner of this match, as had seen 8 goals. He was pleased to take 3 point back to Leeuwarden, but showed some concern about the three goals Cambuur got against this match.

FC Hoorn - Cambuur 3-5 (2-3)
