I agree with having trophies. However, medals is a fast look at your achievements, withou having to go to your club site.
I don't care if they are displayed as medals, or as trophies. Wit a limited number of pixels, I can assure, that making a medal image is way easier.
And when you look at the manager overview, you can see his achievements.

A trophy cabinet would be nicer, but this change to the medals is also a step in the right direction.
I am champion this season but I have grey medal. Is it ok?
Yes, because those are still for the previous season. As soon as the season is over you will get your gold medal, don't worry :-)
I think it is a bug. I got a gold medal directly after becoming champion.

My Champions League Medal is still grey, thought it would have gone to gold by now. It does say I have 2 international titles, but not showing as a gold star.
Also my League madel is still grey but I believe it will change by the end of the season/beginning of next season. If you go to countries the league champions shown there are still the ones from the previous season and not the current season.
Last champion and leader for now, but I still have grey medal.
